Method

Step-by-Step Instructions for Black Forest Trifle
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a cake pan, then prepare your chocolate cake batter. Bake and let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely for about 30 minutes before cutting into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, pour 2 cups of heavy cream. Beat on medium speed until soft peaks form (about 3-4 minutes). Gradually add sugar to taste, then beat until thick and holds firm peaks.
  3. In a trifle dish or individual cups, layer chocolate cake cubes, whipped cream, and cherries. Repeat until filled, finishing with whipped cream on top.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best) to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Remove from refrigerator before serving. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings, then serve with a large spoon for even portions.
