- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, water or apple juice, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir over medium heat until dissolved, about 2 minutes. Add sliced and peeled apples, cooking for an additional 3 to 5 minutes.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the milk and melted butter. Stir gently until mixed.
- Pour the batter over the apple filling, smoothing it out. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top.
- Bake for 38 to 40 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
